Habitats and Adaptations

Participants will experience lessons that utilize art, math, geography and live science to explore ecology. The lessons are designed to motivate students, encourage critical thinking, and make learning fun. This course will specifically focus on animal adaptations and different habitats, with visits from live animals from various ecosystems! Lessons are flexible, allowing teachers to adjust for their students’ abilities; and relate to all age groups in several subject areas. All lessons are connected to the Framework for K-12 Science Education, the Iowa Core Curriculum for science, math and literacy and NGSS.
Location: Blank Park Zoo
When: 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. both days
Cost: $50 per person (does not include license renewal fee), includes lunch both days
The Blank Park Zoo invites educators to participate in our unique, fun-filled, and informative workshops.
Each workshop is worth one hour of recertification credit through Heartland AEA. Information regarding credit registration will be provided prior to each workshop.
Participants in this workshops engage in relevant inquiry investigations that are connected to the Iowa Core and Next Generation Science Standards, learn research-based instructional practices, and gain knowledge and ideas that will be useful in their classrooms. Lessons are flexible, allowing teachers to adjust for their students’ abilities; and relate to all age groups in several subject areas (science, literacy, mathematics, social studies, and the arts).
By attending one or more of these workshops, teachers will be eligible to schedule a free animal program at the zoo, or a discounted program in their classrooms. A free program may also be done via Zoom or other electronic means.
Our education department is willing and able to travel to districts across the state with our classroom programs. Programs are connected to the Iowa Core in Science may be also adjusted to meet social studies and language standards or other curriculum needs of individual classrooms.
