Teaching Outdoor Skills: Fish Iowa! Basic Fishing

This two-day workshop will acquaint participants with the Fish Iowa! Basic Spincasting teaching module and a variety of other resources to teach fishing in a variety of settings. Participants will learn fishing basics including fish identification, fishing locations, casting techniques, and cleaning and cooking fish. Participants will experience lake/pond fishing (including fishing from a kayak and/or canoe) and be introduced to other types of fishing including spinning, bait casting, and fly-fishing. Instruction will include a variety of demonstration and hands-on, experiential approaches. Activities will also include peer teaching and small group work to develop appropriate teaching strategies for individual teaching situations.
Registration fee includes lunch, teaching modules, and an instructor kit. Course meets 9:00 am – 6:00 pm 7/29 and 7:00 am – 3:00 pm 7/30. Assignment due 8/14/19.
Cost: participant only – $100; recertification credit – $135; Drake – $210
Naturalists can create an account in AEA Online learning and register as “participant only” for any of these. Registration cost covers meals, teaching materials, rentals, and other expenses to run the workshop. Only individuals seeking credit are required to submit follow-up assignments.
